iPhone FAQ : Miscellaneous
- Can I use my existing AT&T or Cingular SIM card?
- Yes, but it requires activation in iTunes.
- Where is the SIM card?
- iPhone has a thin, unlabeled cover on the top with a pinhole opening on its left side. This is a SIM card tray and can be ejected by inserting a small straightened paperclip into the hole and pushing gently but firmly.
- Can I use custom ringtones?
Can I assign songs as ringtones?
Can I assign custom ringtones to specific people in my address book? - iPhone does not support custom ringtones, but does offer 25 very nice ringtones. You cannot use custom sound (or iTunes) files as ringtones, nor buy ringtones from AT&T or the iTunes Store. You may assign custom ringtones to contacts.
- If one ignores a text message notification sound, does iPhone periodically make a noise?
- No.
- How does the touchscreen work? Does it work with gloves? a stylus?
- The iPhone touchscreen is a grid capacitance sensor (like the Trackpads used in Apple's laptops). It is triggered by a conductive point(s) on or very near its surface, such as fingertips. It may or may not work through gloves; experience with Apple Trackpads would imply that only the thinest of cotton or silk gloves might work. A PDA stylus is unlikely to work (most styli are non-conductive plastic).
- Does iPhone support the Nike + kit?
- No.
- Can the iPhone display or input any languages other than English?
- Yes, Apple's tech specs list Support for display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously. The interface is not localized to other languages.
- Who provides technical support?
- Still unknown. Apple has stated they wish to manage the customer relationship, but the voice and data service is provided by AT&T. For the moment, we would direct functional questions to Apple and phone/EDGE data/service questions to AT&T
- Will the iPhone be able to record a call in progress?
- No.
- How do I turn iPhone off?
- Press and hold the button on the top, then confirm by swiping the red bar on the screen.
- What system software is required on my Mac or PC?
- Mac: Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later
PC: Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate Edition; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later (iPhone does not support 64-bit Windows)
Both require iTunes 7.3. - Can iPhone be locked with a password?
- Yes, an optional four-digit passcode can be required whenever iPhone is turned on or woken from sleep. This passcode also prevents photos from being downloaded via iTunes.
