iPhone FAQ : Internet Tools > Email

What email software is used?
iPhone has a custom email client that supports HTML "rich" email.

What email services/servers does it support?
iPhone appears to support any standard POP or IMAP internet mail server, including Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and .Mac mail. The original launch announcement stated that it would support "push" email notification from Yahoo! Mail. Apple notes iPhone can sync with a Yahoo! address book.

What about Microsoft Exchange?
iPhone would work with any Exchange server that permits POP or IMAP connections. Not all Exchange administrators allow POP or IMAP access, but if Outlook Web Access is enabled, in theory the web browser should permit access this way. (Microsoft encourages companies to license its Exchange messaging protocol instead of using industry-standard IMAP.)

Can it view attachments?
iPhone can view PDF, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and image attachments. The Word viewer appears to use the same simplified rendering as Mac OS X's TextEdit program, so not all formatting or embedded graphics may be displayed as they would in Word.

How do I set it up?
iTunes will configure iPhone for you using settings from Mail on Mac or Outlook on Windows. It also can be configured manually to use any IMAP or POP mail server.

Does iPhone support multiple email accounts?
Yes. Apple's Guided Tour shows the Settings screen for email, including an "Add Account" option. [Thanks to MacInTouch reader Sherman Wilcox for this answer.] Apple's Activation and Sync video shows multiple accounts in iTunes; you can choose specific accounts to sync, so email accounts are not an all-or-nothing affair.

Does Mail support RSS feeds, like Leopard Mail will?
No.

Does iPhone sync email folders that are "on my mac"?
No. iPhone syncs your email settings but not your email contents — it retrieves email itself. Apple's Activation & Sync video shows a setting on iPhone that can limit how many messages it retrieves.

Can iPhone hold my entire email archives?
No, iPhone is limited to at most the 200 most recent messages per account.

Can iPhone sync user-defined IMAP account sub-folders?
iPhone appears to sync all IMAP sub-folders; subfolder content is not synced until you view the folder.

What image formats can mail view?
Apple lists JPG, GIF and TIFF. It also plays mp3 attachments.
